Valentine’s Day is a holiday for couples to reaffirm their relationship and commitment to each other. For single women and some men, it is a reminder of eternal loneliness. For women, Valentine’s Day is a reminder of the importance of having a man, not just as a partner, but as a person to provide physical and financial protection. In a way, it reinforces society’s perception of female dependency and traditional anti-feminist values. But strong independent females can also turn around the meaning of Valentine’s Day as a way to assert dominance by controlling men and forcing a man to buy an expensive dinner and jewelry.
But in the end, we must remind ourselves that it is not a holiday to celebrate female independence or feminism but to celebrate couples. Singles should have nothing to worry about because they have personal freedom. On the other hand, it can reaffirm the divide between society’s pretty people and the ugly people who can’t find a date, just kidding.
